Succour
Literally, to run to, or run to support; hence to help or relieve when in difficulty, want or distress; to assist and deliver from suffering; as, to succour a besieged city; to succour prisoners.
This word is an awesome word when used in conjunction with how God interacts with his children. It is a picture of God on the battlefield with us. He constantly keeps His eye on us and listens for our pleas for help. Whenever we call out to him, he succours us. That means our Captain, who by the way is more powerful than anything imagineable, comes to our rescue, delivering us from a sure defeat.
If you watched the movie Lord of the Rings, during the scene where all hope was lost and Helm’s Deep was facing complete annihilation; the morning sun suddenly radiated over a ridge, cutting through the darkness, and there was Gandalf on his white charger, with battle banners flying. His magnificent stallion raised itself up for battle as Gandalf was about to succour them from certain defeat. As Gandalf and his host of warriors charged down the mountain, terror gripped the heart of the enemy. The enemy was annihilated, the city was saved.
The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies. Psalm 18:2-3
